Je vais travailler pendant ces prochains mois sur une \u00e9volution de l&rsquo;Utopia, un d\u00e9lai analogique. Aujourd\u2019hui, on va donc voir ensemble les recherches que je suis en train de mener sur les p\u00e9dales de d\u00e9lai. On va parler de d\u00e9lais analogiques, ou devrais-je dire, analog-voiced ! On va aussi introduire les diff\u00e9rentes technologies pour concevoir le meilleur d\u00e9lai possible. Il existe sous plusieurs formes, allant des anciens d\u00e9lais analogiques \u00e0 bandes jusqu\u2019au rack num\u00e9rique ultra sophistiqu\u00e9. En passant bien s\u00fbr par les p\u00e9dales d\u2019effets ! On va voir ensemble ce qui fait les principales diff\u00e9rences entre toutes ces technologies. Comme un enregistreur, une t\u00eate d&rsquo;\u00e9criture enregistrait le signal sur une bande magn\u00e9tique. Puis, une ou plusieurs t\u00eates de lecture venaient lire la bande avec plus ou moins de retard. Ces fluctuations de vitesse produisaient un effet de modulation vraiment caract\u00e9ristique. On le retrouve lorsque qu\u2019on s\u2019amuse \u00e0 tourner le potard de vitesse de sa p\u00e9dale de d\u00e9lai ! De plus, la bande magn\u00e9tique pouvait introduire une l\u00e9g\u00e8re saturation qui d\u00e9gradait les r\u00e9p\u00e9titions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A l&rsquo;\u00e9poque, ces caract\u00e9ristiques \u00e9taient vues comme des d\u00e9fauts \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer. Mais avec le temps, elles sont devenues la signature d&rsquo;un d\u00e9lai analogique chaleureux avec une texture sonore unique. On a donc eu rapidement besoin de trouver une nouvelle technologie plus fiable et surtout plus compacte. Les solutions reposent toutes plus ou moins sur le m\u00eame fonctionnement avec un circuit qui va retarder le signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dans une p\u00e9dale de d\u00e9lai, le signal en entr\u00e9e est donc divis\u00e9 en deux. La premi\u00e8re partie va directement \u00e0 la sortie sans \u00eatre modifi\u00e9e (le signal dry). La seconde partie va \u00eatre retard\u00e9e par un circuit avant d\u2019aller \u00e9galement \u00e0 la sortie. Ce signal va cr\u00e9er une premi\u00e8re r\u00e9p\u00e9tition. Par exemple, en ajoutant des filtres ou du clipping sur les r\u00e9p\u00e9titions, on peut les rendre plus ou moins sombres ou satur\u00e9es. On peut aussi ajouter de la modulation pour simuler un d\u00e9lai analogique \u00e0 bande. On va donc d\u00e9crypter un peu tout \u00e7a ensemble. Je vais aussi vous expliquer pourquoi de mon point de vue, hormis les d\u00e9lais \u00e0 bandes, le d\u00e9lai 100% analogique n\u2019existe pas&nbsp;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">le bbd est-il r\u00e9ellement un d\u00e9lai analogique, ou alors un analog-voiced delay ?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Le BBD (Bucket Brigade Device) est la premi\u00e8re technologie qui a permis de cr\u00e9er des p\u00e9dales de d\u00e9lai compactes. Pour cela, ils se munissent chacun d\u2019un seau. Le premier va remplir son seau avec de l\u2019eau, puis va le verser dans le seau de son voisin. A son tour, il va faire la m\u00eame chose avec son voisin pendant que le premier remplira \u00e0 nouveau son seau. L&rsquo;eau va donc arriver au dernier pompier apr\u00e8s un certain temps. Il s\u2019agit juste d\u2019une s\u00e9rie de transistors qui vont jouer le r\u00f4le d&rsquo;interrupteurs. Pilot\u00e9s par une clock externe, ils vont \u00ab\u00a0verser\u00a0\u00bb le signal d\u2019entr\u00e9e de condensateurs en condensateurs (seaux) pour le retarder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">pourquoi est-ce que je consid\u00e8re le bbd comme un analog-voiced delay ?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u00eame si il est souvent pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 comme un d\u00e9lai 100% analogique, le BBD n\u00e9cessite une clock et plusieurs \u00e9tages de filtrage, en entr\u00e9e afin d\u2019obtenir un signal exploitable par le BBD, puis en sortie pour reconstituer le signal, ce qui est quand m\u00eame tr\u00e8s proche des techniques d&rsquo;\u00e9chantillonnage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1104\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/anasounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Schema-BBD-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39813\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anasounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Schema-BBD-1.jpg 1104w, https:\/\/anasounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Schema-BBD-1-700x168.jpg 700w, https:\/\/anasounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Schema-BBD-1-768x184.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1104px) 100vw, 1104px\" \/><figcaption>Ligne de retard bas\u00e9e sur une puce BBD : le circuit ressemble \u00e0 une cascade d&rsquo;\u00e9chantillonneurs-bloqueurs pilot\u00e9s par une clock, et n\u00e9cessite pas mal d&rsquo;\u00e9l\u00e9ments externes qui vont modifier la dynamique du signal.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On se retrouve donc avec un circuit qui pr\u00e9sente des contraintes semblables \u00e0 une num\u00e9risation. Mais bien s\u00fbr on n\u2019est pas non plus sur du num\u00e9rique pur avec des lignes de codes dans un processeur ! De plus, de la m\u00eame fa\u00e7on que l&rsquo;image du \u00ab\u00a0Bucket Brigade\u00a0\u00bb o\u00f9 l&rsquo;on peut avoir des pertes \u00e0 chaque transfert d&rsquo;eau, le BBD engendre des pertes d&rsquo;informations. Ces pertes ajoutent du bruit blanc et emp\u00eachent d\u2019obtenir des r\u00e9p\u00e9titions claires et bien d\u00e9finies. Mais c&rsquo;est ce qui en fait aussi sa caract\u00e9ristique sonore, qui peut \u00e9galement rappeler la saturation d\u2019un d\u00e9lai analogique \u00e0 bande !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le BBD s\u2019apparente donc plus selon moi \u00e0 un analog-voiced delay plut\u00f4t qu\u2019\u00e0 un d\u00e9lai analogique. On a une ligne de retard se rapprochant d\u2019un traitement num\u00e9rique, mais elle est entour\u00e9e par un circuit enti\u00e8rement analogique. C&rsquo;est ce circuit analogique qui va permettre de cr\u00e9er la texture sonore recherch\u00e9e. Finalement, peut \u00eatre que le v\u00e9ritable d\u00e9lai analogique reste le d\u00e9lai \u00e0 bande, et que l&rsquo;analog-voiced delay est la technologie permettant de s&rsquo;en rapprocher au mieux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"nm-block-heading wp-block-heading\">le pt2399, la simplicit\u00e9 et la flexibilit\u00e9 du analog-voiced delay !<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Une solution plus r\u00e9cente est le PT2399, cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Princeton Technology Corp. Cette puce de d\u00e9lai dite num\u00e9rique a l\u2019avantage d\u2019int\u00e9grer directement un CAN, un CNA, une RAM et une clock. On peut donc cr\u00e9er un retard assez facilement sans avoir besoin d\u2019autant de circuits de conditionnement que le BBD. Mais le gros avantage du PT2399 par rapport au BBD est qu&rsquo;il permet d&rsquo;obtenir des r\u00e9p\u00e9titions mieux d\u00e9finies. Son circuit de retard est aussi plus simple, permettant ainsi une meilleure flexibilit\u00e9 sur le traitement analogique. Certains disent m\u00eame que \u00e7a manquerait de \u00ab\u00a0couleur\u00a0\u00bb&nbsp;compar\u00e9 aux d\u00e9lais analogiques ! Cependant, l\u2019avanc\u00e9e de la technologie a fait de gros progr\u00e8s, et les d\u00e9lais num\u00e9riques sont aujourd\u2019hui \u00e0 la hauteur des autres technologies. Cela a permis de cr\u00e9er toute une vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de d\u00e9lais, du simple \u00e9cho aux p\u00e9dales et racks ultra complets, pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 tous les besoins&nbsp;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour revenir \u00e0 l&rsquo;Utopia, l\u2019id\u00e9e \u00e9tait de simuler un d\u00e9lai analogique \u00e0 bande. On s\u2019est donc naturellement tourn\u00e9 vers la technologie du analog-voiced delay plut\u00f4t que le DSP. Le PT2399 \u00e9tant toujours produit et plus facilement trouvable que le BBD, il a l\u2019avantage de revenir moins cher. Ca nous permet donc de pouvoir proposer un prix de vente correct. En plus de \u00e7a, sa conception laisse davantage de place et de flexibilit\u00e9 pour exp\u00e9rimenter sur le traitement analogique du signal que les BBD, moins polyvalents et aussi plus bruyants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais le BBD a aussi ses avantages, de par sa coloration sonore sp\u00e9cifique.
